Victor Hugo Lopez Bustamante has been performing for audiences on the Winnipeg live music scene for well over two decades. His skill-sets as a guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and band-leader keep him busy throughout the year as a free-lance musician in many of Winnipeg’s most notable music groups. His work as a side-man includes groups such as Papa Mambo, Dr. Henry Band, Trio Bembe, and the Chuck Copenace group. Victor’s ability and fluidity to authentically blend his guitar skills into various genres can be attributed to his training in the Bachelor of Jazz Degree program at University of Manitoba as well as his own personal studies abroad in Cuba, Argentina & Chile. His musical DNA reflects both his Canadian and Latin-American upbringing, and spans the genres of Cuban music, Jazz, Hip-hop, R&b, Latin American Folklore, Tango and more from all over the world. Whether leading his own groups (Meta-Clave, The Subversives), or lending his talents to various musical projects in Winnipeg and abroad, his musicianship, joy and expression shine through.
As a teacher with nearly two decades worth of music instruction taught to students ranging from ages 6-60, Victor has developed tailored methods for teaching guitar, ukulele, bass, music theory, jazz and improvisation. By using his insights into fretted-instruments mechanics, the Barry Harris’ approach to jazz language & harmony, as well as more traditional approaches to theory, rhythm, and melodic improvisation, Victor Hugo Lopez Bustamante customizes lessons for each clients’ needs to get them excelling at making music!
